CBD: whats the right dosage?

CBD is a relatively new discovery in the wellness realm, and has come to offer great benefits for those who want to lead a natural lifestyle. However, it’s that same newness which may raise different questions regarding its use and its effects.

CBD is one in over 60 active compounds found in the cannabis plant and it may affect your body in different ways. It may actually affect bodies differently since we all have particular characteristics, but it’s important to notice that, in any case, CBD is not a psychoactive substance.

Consider your particular physical characteristics before choosing a specific dosage

Ask your physician for advice before taking CBD

Among its many uses, people choose CBD to:

  • Reduce stress and mood swings
  • Improve sleep
  • Reduce seizures (epilepsy)
  • Soothe pain and inflammation
  • Improve heart health
  • Improve symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

You may be wondering what the best dosage is to get all the desired benefits. Since CBD isn’t currently regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are no official recommended dosages. However, research has proven CBD to be a relatively safe treatment, and quantities may range anywhere between 20 and 1,500mg per day.
To figure out what’s best for your body, you should take the following aspects into consideration:

  • Weight
  • The condition you want to treat
  • Your particular body chemistry
  • The concentration of CBD in the product of choice

Most importantly, before trying CBD, talk to your physician about an appropriate dosage and any potential risks. This is especially important if you’re already taking other medications.
Remember that it’s vital that you give your body time to get used to CBD so that you can also trace new changes. It’s also good advice to keep track of your process: write it down or keep it in your phone.

Alright but, anyways, how can I calculate the dosage?

In most cases, products like pills, softgels, and gummies include the exact amount of CBD per serving in their label, which makes it easy to calculate your intake. However, in the case of oils it may be more difficult to calculate; oftentimes the label only indicates the total amount per bottle. If this is the case, here’s a useful tip to do the math: One single drop is about 0.05ml. Then, a 10ml bottle of CBD oil contains 200 drops. And if the packaging for that bottle says it contains 1,000mg of CBD, each drop will contain about 5mg of CBD.

What if I get it wrong? Is it possible to overdose?

Studies on CBD’s safety and side effects in the last decade have shown that humans tolerate even high daily doses very well; high meaning around 1,500mg per day. However, a 2019 study raised some concerns on CBD high intakes related to possible liver damage and interactions with other medications, which is why it’s essential to discuss this with your doctor in case you’re under any treatment.

Regarding side effects, it’s quite uncommon that they occur. However, some possible reactions to CBD are fatigue, diarrhea, changes in appetite, and  changes in weight, which have also been related to low-quality products and reactions to synthetic CBD. To reduce the chances, make sure to buy high quality products.
